I recently made my second attempt at painting a cake. It had been a long time since I first painted decorations for my son's first birthday party, so I was a little nervous about attempting a full watercolour floral cake. It ended up turning out pretty well but I have definitely learned a few lessons from what I came up with.
First off, always start out with only a tiny bit of food colouring gel - I use Wilton colouring gels. I started with the gel and then added vodka, but in hindsight I would do it the other way around and much less colour to achieve a better watercolour effect.
Secondly, let each layer of paint try thoroughly before trying to paint over the top of it (the fondant can get quite sticky and sometimes bubble if it gets too wet). I got impatient and I later regretted it!
Thirdly (and this might seem obvious), don't paint the cake when its on the final cake board, as you will more than likely get paint on the board! Whoops....!
All in all, I'm still pleased with how it came out. I love the metallic gold 3D accents I added after I finished painting, it really gave the cake another dimension that I wasnt expecting to achieve! I used Rolkem Super Gold Powder for this.
